Color Cubes Solution

Page history last edited by Anonymous 2 yrs ago

In the poem, first notice the colored letters in the poem:

red: NAUGHT

green: ONE

blue: TWO

Then, follow the directions in the second stanza of the poem. For each cube, color each square red, green, or blue such that on each side, each column and row has 1 of each color, and a color does not touch another square of the same color along an edge (even if the squares are on different sides of the cube). The outlined cells show the squares that are initially colored:

Cube with "red" numbers
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0
            0 1 2
      1 0 2 1 2 0 1 2 0
      0 2 1 0 1 2 0 1 2
      2 1 0 2 0 1 2 0 1
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2

Cube with "green" numbers
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
      1 2 0 1 2 0 2 1 0
      0 1 2 0 1 2 1 0 2
      2 0 1 2 0 1 0 2 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0

Cube with "blue" numbers
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
      0 1 2 0 1 2 1 0 2
      1 2 0 1 2 0 2 1 0
      2 0 1 2 0 1 0 2 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0

Then, convert colors to numbers in accordance with the third stanza:

Cube with red numbers
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0
            0 1 2
      1 0 2 1 2 0 1 2 0
      0 2 1 0 1 2 0 1 2
      2 1 0 2 0 1 2 0 1
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2

Cube with green numbers
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
      1 2 0 1 2 0 2 1 0
      0 1 2 0 1 2 1 0 2
      2 0 1 2 0 1 0 2 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0

Cube with blue numbers
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0
            2 0 1
            0 1 2
            1 2 0
      0 1 2 0 1 2 1 0 2
      1 2 0 1 2 0 2 1 0
      2 0 1 2 0 1 0 2 1
            0 1 2
            2 0 1
            1 2 0

The 27 numbers on the face of the cubes give an ordering of letters in the solution. Each letter corresponds to a trinary number with one trinary digit from each cube.

The digits on the blue cube go in the 3^2 (nines) place, while those on the blue cube go in the 3^1 (threes) place, and those on the red cube go in the 3^0 (ones) place.

  R G B Trinary Decimal Letter

5 2 0 0 002 2 B

19 0 2 1 120 15 O
20 1 1 0 011 4 D
21 1 2 0 021 7 G
22 2 1 0 012 5 E
23 2 0 2 202 20 T
24 1 1 2 211 22 V
25 1 1 1 111 13 M
26 1 0 0 001 1 A
27 2 1 1 112 14 N

The letters spell out LAZYBEARDEDPOSSUMLODGETVMAN.

The name of the lazy bearded man on TV from Possum Lodge is Red Green, from the Canadian sketch comedy "The Red Green Show".

And thus letters become colors, and the cubes attain new meaning, thriceforth, and thriceafter.

For your reference, here are all the times the number 3 appears in this clue (that we know of):

* 3 colors (red/green/blue)

* 3 cubes

* 3 stanzas in the poem

* each stanza is a multiple of 3 lines long

* each cube is 3-dimensional

* each side of the cube has 3 rows

* each side of the cube has 3 columns

* each cube has 3^3 numbers on it

* each row/column of each face of the cube must have 3 different colors

* 3 translation steps (colors->numbers, numbers->letters, letters->colors)

* numbers are expressed in base 3

* each letter is composed of 3 trinary digits
